Sad but true, I broke my camera

After 5 years of good use, my trusty Hp-945 finally reacted to the wear. A corner on the camera body which houses the AA batteries got chipped on Friday night during the game. A quick fix with black hockey tape, provided by the nice officials in the penalty box, helped to keep it functioning.

Back at home, I managed to put some (don't laugh) industrial strength Velcro strips to keep the battery door closed and was able to continue shooting throughout Saturday's game.

I don't know how much longer the quick fix will last, and I don't know how else to repair it.

The sad part is that I can't afford to buy a new camera. Maybe soon, but not now. In the meantime, I want to thank all of you who have clicked on my ads on this blog. I have earned $1.16 so far and I know that I am on my way to achieving my goal of $400.00 to purchase a new camera.

So please, even if you only visit once in a while, click on the ads even if you don't care to buy. Every little penny adds up. I can't click on my own ads or I will be booted from Blogger. LOL!

And another thing, feel free to leave comments and suggestions. Would like to post whatever ideas you have. Help me make this site a bit more interesting. As you can see, I have no talent whatsoever.

The Laredo Bucks set a franchise record start of season with 6 consecutive wins giving them a total of 12 points.

Here some highlights from the Friday game against the Corpus Christi Rayz and the Saturday game against the Amarillo Gorillas.

'Twas the night before the first home game......

The Laredo Bucks are off to a great start this season with a perfect 6 points for their 3 game road trip.

The last time the Bucks began with 3 victories in a row (actually was 5 in a row) was the 2003-2004 season when they tallied a total of 48 wins, 8 losses,8 overtime losses and won the President's Cup.

It was the year that Jeff Bes won the CHL's Most Valuable Player award amassing 117 points. Of those 117, 78 were assists. I like to think of him as "Mr. Assist"--always there to anchor the goal. Congratulations to Jeff---he's off to a great start this season again.

The Bucks face the Corpus Christi Rayz aka Coors Light team Friday night for our home opener. Amarillo will visit the LEC on Saturday.

I shouldn't make fun of the Rayz being the Coors Light team. With all the special event nights planned at the LEC home games this season, I have the feeling that we will never see any more specialty jerseys like the Halloween, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas, New Year's, President's Day, Valentine's, Mardi Gras, & St. Patrick's Day jerseys of years past. No more Pepto Pink hearts or cutesy clovers in plaid.

Nope, I fear that the sponsor's logo will replace the Buck in the chest of the boy's jerseys. I know, scary thought. But think of the money they will save. The sponsors pay for the jerseys, and then they are auctioned off and guess who keeps the money? Aha......that's who.

Seriously, how much money can a sponsor's tacky logo on a jersey bring in? We will become just like any other CHL team who loses their identity in exchange for promoting their sponsors and showing off hideous jerseys.

Oh well............bring it on! We're ready for some hockey!

On a side note: I saw the fancy intro before the first Colorado Eagles home game. Mama mia.......they spent a fortune on that. Awesome pyro and laser show. Dancing figures on the ice. Hollywood style videos too. Maybe, we will have......nah.....we never will......::sigh::

At a bank on I-35, flags wave at attention as high winds tatter their edges this morning as the first cold front of the season rolled in.

Productive road trip, thus far

The Laredo Bucks are one of five teams to have successfully won their first two games of the season. And for the Bucks, starting on the road, this is huge.

Rocky Mountain, Texas, Youngstown, and Arizona are the other four boasting a 4 point lead.

Opening day, Friday, had the Bucks shower 8 goals on the Scorpions. Bucks' speed advantage was clearly evident, not to mention the Bucks' defense. Goalie Dustin Traylen was solid in net. The Scorpions found themselves out hustled by Laredo, able to score only twice.

>>>>>>>>> G -- A
Korchinski --- 2 -- 2
Hiebert ------ 2 -- 1
McSween -----2 -- 1
Penner ------ 1 -- 1
Carnegie ----- 1 -- 1
Dube ------------3
Walker -----------2
Bes, Elliott, Rivet, & Agarunov scored 1 assist each

Saturday was a complete turnaround. After the first 20 minutes of play, the Bucks found themselves down 3 goals to New Mexico.

Traylen again controlled the net for the Bucks, but it was a breakdown in defense that allowed the Scorpions to capitalize.

The second period had Laredo on a mission to dominate, and indeed they did. Hiebert scored 2 of 3 goals for the period, and Simoes scored the third. Bes and Iggy assisted twice.

Score after two periods was New Mexico 4 - Laredo 3

Rivet tied the game, assisted by Bes & Dube in the third, forcing overtime.

Bes scored at 2:58 of overtime to win the game and surpass his previously tied record with Chris Grenville for most goals scored for the Laredo Bucks franchise.

Warm hugs to Rivet for tieing the game and forcing overtime, and congratulations to Jeff Bes for winning the game and setting a new record.

Tuesday morning Oct. 23, the Bucks will face the Amarillo Gorillas in Amarillo for the 3rd and final match of this 3 game road trip. Game time is 11:00 A.M.

Of course, we miss Joe

When you lose someone, you realize the role they played in your life. We were definitely spoiled having Joe as our broadcaster. That’s the honest truth. He is better than the best, and the comparisons to our new voice are inevitable.

I am sure that Bryan is a beautiful person and this isn’t anything personal about him, but we were promised experience and professionalism along with his credentials. We did not expect a rookie who would use our time to improve. This is the big show, and we expected him to be prepared and in control. However, we are definitely open minded and patient and will allow him to improve as he goes along.

Constructive criticism is a valuable tool for self improvement. The following are some tidbits that need some tweaking before they become bad habits:

Refrain from calling the players by their nicknames. Not professional.

Unnecessary repetition of expressions such as, “of course”, “flips the puck”, etc.

Throwing too many stats from beginning of the game to the end. Too many numbers one after another. Sounds monotonous and boring.

Intermission report needs sound replays of goals. Simply reading what time in the period the goals were scored and by whom is not enough.

Intermission report needs some guests or even previously recorded interviews with players. Maybe during home game intermissions, go down to the discriminating Bucks hockey expert fan with a wireless mic and get their input so far.

Better description of the plays that lead to the goals scored by both teams. Who had the puck before passing to scorer etc.

Drop the excitement when the other team scores.

Better questions for coach. Do not suppose that the audience knows what you’re talking about.

Keep the tone, excitement, and inflection in voice under control.

Avoid the temptation to ramble and repeat what’s already said.

Describe the save our goalie made, the hit given/taken by our players, the passing of the puck, the perspective of direction of the puck so the listeners can picture where they are going.

Do more homework on our players and opponent players such as mentioning where they were playing in previous season(s), highlights of their all time records, and exceptional performance in games played when and with whom.

Be creative. Bring new approaches to the broadcast. Add new features to the broadcast. Make it your own signature broadcast.

Learn the game of hockey. The letter A on our player’s jersey, refers to being alternate captain not assistant captain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reebok_Edge

Ask your friends for their critique. Demand that they not comfort you with praise or you will not become a better broadcaster. They will do more harm than good by being nice. Set the friendship aside.

Listen to what fans say about you. Do not confuse suggestions as vicious attacks but rather ideas for personal growth.

Loosen up. Have fun. Don't sound cheesy, immature, or lacking knowledge.

Research and listen to succesful broadcasters and learn from their expertise. It won't hurt to listen to Joe Dominey so you can see where we are coming from. No, we do not want you to imitate, just innovate.

Don't settle for mediocre.

Rampage - Aeros preseason

The AHL's San Antonio Rampage and Houston Aeros played a pre-season game at the Laredo Entertainment Center on Friday, Sept. 28. Laredo hockey fans got a sneak peek at talent from a higher league.
